Current and Past National and State Projects

  • Red Wolf Species Survival Plan - The zoo contributes to red wolf recovery by providing wolf holding space and participating in red wolf genetic and hormonal studies. Contributed to the repair of hurricane damaged red wolf pens in Alligator River National Refuge.
  • U. S. Geological Survey Breeding Bird Survey route in Fincastle, VA
  • Technical assistance to Natureserve Vegetation Ecologists in monitoring vegetation plots for the National Park Service. 
  • Donations to the biofacts divison of US Fish and Wildlife Service National Forensics Lab for their standards collections for officer education in identification of illegal traffic in wildlife parts.

Current and Past Local Projects

  • Roanoke Valley Bird Club Bluebird Trail Monitoring project - The Zoo assists the club with bluebird trail monitoring along the Blue Ridge Parkway and at Botetourt County Country Club and has adopted a bluebird house.
  • Great Backyard Bird Count     
  • Resource Conservation - Zoo staff conserves resources by recycling materials, purchasing minimally packaged or used items and using energy and water saving methods.
